Mr. François-Philippe Champagne, MP for Saint-Maurice-Champlain and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finances, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for CED, announces that the Quebec Metallurgy Centre is receiving financial support for purchasing leading-edge equipment to strengthen its applied research capacity, for the benefit of Canadian companies that make innovation central to their growth strategy.
The financial assistance announced today amounts to $1,500,000. It is provided in the form of a non-repayable contribution under CED's Quebec Economic Development Program.
Quick facts
- Established in 1985, the Quebec Metallurgy Centre (QMC) is a college centre for technology transfer (CCTT) of the Trois-Rivières CÉGEP.
- The QMC is a Canadian reference in technology transfer and R&D for the metallurgy industry. The value of its stock of equipment exceeds $12 million and some of the machines are unique in the country, such as a cold crucible vacuum melting furnace, an ultrasonic welding machine and a 3D printer through metal powder projection into a laser beam.
- It is the only centre in Canada capable of developing industry-specific alloys of titanium and zirconium.
- The funding awarded enables the QMC to purchase other leading-edge equipment, including a 3D printer for creating hardened sand molds with a binder, a high-power electronic microscope and non-destructive monitoring equipment.
- This project, which is intended to strengthen the QMC's applied research capacity, will promote better technology transfer to Canadian companies in the metallurgy sector, particularly regarding non-destructive testing of metal parts.
Quotations
"By supporting the QMC, the Government of Canada is enabling the organization to acquire the equipment needed for developing innovative technologies and processes for the benefit of Canadian companies in the metallurgy sector. The latter will thereby be able to focus on innovation, a true economic driver and cornerstone of growth that communities benefit from."
The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister responsible for CED
"Over the years, the QMC has become an essential player in the field of metallurgy. Driven by its desire to become the Canadian leader in technology transfer in connection with non-destructive testing of metal parts, the organization has developed a service offering that meets the needs of Mauricie enterprises as well as those of many other enterprises elsewhere in the country."
