Trustlook Releases WannaCry Ransomware Scanner and Vaccine Toolkit

New Software Protects Windows Systems from Dangerous Worldwide Cyberattack

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwired - May 15, 2017) - Trustlook, a next-generation cybersecurity company, has released a free scanner and vaccine toolkit to help protect Windows computers that are either vulnerable to, or have been infected with, the dangerous strain of ransomware known as WannaCry. Trustlook's toolkit provides protection against 49 WannaCry samples, and can be downloaded from GitHub.

Banks, telephone companies and hospitals have all been ensnared in the worldwide hack, with the malware locking down computers while demanding a hefty sum for freedom. The attack has hit more than 230,000 computers in 150 countries including China, Russia, Spain, Italy and Vietnam, with hospitals in the UK attracting the most attention because real lives have been put at risk while their devices are locked down. Ransom payments have been demanded in the cryptocurrency bitcoin in 28 languages.

"This attack is unprecedented in scale," said Allan Zhang, co-founder and CEO of Trustlook. "Windows users and administrators should ensure that their systems are updated with the latest security patches to help prevent further infections and to slow the spread of the ransomware."

The WannaCry attack is caused by the illegal use of the EternalBlue exploit, which was leaked from the NSA hacker arsenal earlier this year. EternalBlue exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft's implementation of the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. The exploit will scan 445 file sharing ports from Windows endpoints. If there is Internet access, criminals can implant malicious programs, such as ransomware, onto the computer and server.

The WannaCry outbreak is just more evidence of the severe threat posed by ransomware. In fact, ransomware is the number one cybersecurity threat facing consumers and businesses worldwide. (Trustlook posted research last month on just how big of a problem ransomware is for consumers.)
