Infinera to Present on Next-Generation PICs and Systems at OFC

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - March 4, 2011) - At this year's OFC, Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) executives and development engineers will focus in their presentations on new developments in technologies and systems to enable the next generation of optical communications with higher capacities, better cost efficiencies, and other features to support the exponential growth in worldwide bandwidth demand.

In addition, Infinera's mobile demo unit, the Infinera Express, will be open to guests on the show floor, with demonstrations of the latest Infinera hardware and software. OFC takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from March 6th through 10th in Los Angeles, CA.

Terabit PIC
Infinera demonstrated industry leadership in 2004, when it brought to market the first optical system based on large-scale PICs, the Infinera DTN. Today, photonic integration has become more broadly accepted as a key technology for the future of the network, but Infinera continues to lead in the area of large-scale integration. Earlier this week, in partnership with pan-European service provider Interoute, Infinera announced the first successful subsea field trial of a 500 Gigabit/second (Gb/s) PIC delivering five 100Gb/s channels. At OFC next week, Infinera research fellow Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagarajan will present results of a Terabit PIC, with ten 100Gb/s channels from a single PIC. Dr. Nagarajan will also be presenting on the use of advanced modulation schemes in PICs, in a talk titled, "Polarization Multiplexed (D)QPSK InP Receiver Photonic Integrated Circuits."

Infinera engineers will also be addressing issues in the design and development of next-generation high-capacity systems:

  • Infinera Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer Dr. David Welch will speak on Sunday, March 6th at 4:30pm at a workshop titled "Photonic Integration: More Technologies than Applications?"
  • Infinera's Han Sun and Kuang-Tsan Wu will present on Monday, March 7th at 2:15pm on "A Novel Dispersion and PMD Tolerant Clock Phase Detector for Coherent Transmission Systems."
  • Infinera co-founder and CTO Drew Perkins will participate in an Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) panel on "400G vs. 1 Terabit: Market Needs and Technical Challenges" on Tuesday, March 8th at 10:30am.

Awards for Infinera Team Members
Infinera team members Dr. Fred Kish and Dr. David Welch will be honored with industry awards at this year's OFC. Sr. Vice President of the Optical Integrated Circuit Group Dr. Fred Kish will be made an IEEE Fellow for his contributions in the development and commercialization of monolithic large-scale InP photonic integrated circuits and high-efficiency LEDs.

In another ceremony, Infinera co-founder and chief strategy officer Dr. David Welch will receive the 2011 John Tyndall Award from The Optical Society (OSA) and IEEE Photonics Society. Welch is being recognized for "seminal contributions to photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and semiconductor lasers deployed in fiber optic communication systems around the world." The Tyndall Award is one of the highest honors awarded to individuals in the optical networking industry.

"These awards are recognition of the achievements of the entire Infinera team in developing our groundbreaking large-scale PICs, and we are focused on continuing to innovate and develop new products, technologies and architectures that can help our customers make the network of the future even more powerful, reliable, and economical," said Dr. Welch.

The OFC/NFOEC conference will take place March 6-10 in Los Angeles, CA. Infinera product and technology experts will be on hand to provide information and tours of the Infinera Express, located at booth #2601, 2700 and 2709. To arrange a meeting contact your Infinera representative or email us at events@infinera.com. Further conference information is available at http://www.ofcnfoec.org/.
