Oportun Executive Luz L. Urrutia Named Woman of Influence by Silicon Valley Business Journal

Urrutia Honored for Her Work as a Pioneer of Sustainable and Responsible Finance for Underserved Hispanics in the United States

REDWOOD CITY, CA--(Marketwired - Apr 9, 2015) - Oportun, formerly known as Progreso Financiero, a mission-driven financial services company serving the credit needs of the growing Hispanic market, today announced that Luz Urrutia, Vice President of Retail Sales, has been named a Woman of Influence by Silicon Valley Business Journal. The annual list highlights exceptional women making a difference in their companies, industries and the world around them.

"Luz has been a driving force for sustainable and responsible finance and has been instrumental in expanding access to underserved Hispanics throughout the country," said Oportun CEO Raul Vazquez. "We have worked hard to create an environment that attracts people who are committed to making a difference and we are proud to see one of our leaders get the recognition she has earned."

Inspired by her personal experience trying to obtain credit as an immigrant, Urrutia helped found and lead the pioneering El Banco de Nuestra Comunidad in Georgia before joining Oportun on our mission to provide affordable, credit-building loans for underserved Hispanics.

According to Urrutia, one of the challenges facing women who aspire to leadership positions is that role models are hard to find. "The more organizations can increase the exposure and influence of their senior women, the greater their success in attracting, retaining, and promoting women to senior positions."

Urrutia joined Oportun in 2013 to serve more customers on a broader scale in the largest market in the US. At Oportun, she is responsible for more than 140+ stores in three states -- California, Texas and Illinois. Under her leadership and that of the broader executive team, Oportun has grown dramatically over the past year and has now distributed more than $1.5 billion in loans to over 525K customers. The company was recently named to the Forbes list of America's Most Promising Companies.

The company announced in January that it will transition to the name Oportun over the coming months as it shares the new name with customers and business partners. The name change will be completed by year's end.
