AIX-EN-PROVENCE, FRANCE--(Marketwired - May 12, 2016) - SuperSonic Imagine (
Sport Lisboa Benfica, the famous football (soccer) team in Portugal, and Pure Sport Medicine in London both recently adopted the Aixplorer system including SuperSonic Imagine's real-time ShearWave™ Elastography (SWE™) to optimize rehabilitation for injured athletes and to monitor their recovery. When professional athletes are injured, it becomes expensive for sports organizations and a speedy recovery is critical to minimize the effects for their team. Sport Lisboa Benfica uses the Aixplorer and SWE to quantify tissue loading (e.g. muscle and tendon) before and after injuries, and to control the recovery process. Such a tool has been helpful by giving objective data to determine the best strategies for injury prevention, rehabilitation, and recovery after intense physical efforts.
"Aixplorer's innovative technology works very well for us, especially in our tendon clinic. It provides crystal clear image quality and quantitative tissue evaluation to help us quickly assess professional athletes we see frequently in our practice," stated Halima Muchimba, Practice Manager at Pure Sports Medicine of London.
With Aixplorer, clinicians are able to closely monitor treatment and ultimately gain a better understanding of the recovery process. This advanced ultrasound system provides multiple advanced methods to assist with the evaluation of professional athletes. First, the Aixplorer system's exceptional image quality is optimized specifically for musculoskeletal applications. Second, with ShearWave™ Elastography (SWE™), clinicians can visualize and measure stiffness of muscles and tendons. This is particularly useful for diagnosing and monitoring tendinopathies and examining muscular load with real-time visualization of the anatomic and functional image of the muscle in full use. SWE can potentially provide an understanding of how much an athlete can load in training after an injury or surgery to get them match ready.
In addition to superb image quality and the use of SWE for tissue stiffness evaluation, Aixplorer also provides an exclusive new imaging mode, Angio PL.U.S. (PLanewave UltraSensitive™ imaging) which significantly improves color Doppler sensitivity and spatial resolution, resulting in the next level of microvascular imaging to visualize flows that couldn't be seen before. Through this new technique, sports doctors can now easily identify low-grade tendon or muscle inflammation.
"Sports doctors need to be able to continuously monitor athletes' injuries from initial diagnosis through to recovery. If players return to workouts too quickly, the injuries could become more serious and permanent," said Jacques Souquet, Founder and Chief Innovation Officer. "Having the most advanced tools at hand is key for enabling clinicians to know when it is time to change the course of treatment and when it is safe for athletes to return to their active careers. We are proud to provide such tools for athletic organizations across Europe."
About SuperSonic Imagine
Founded in 2005 and based in Aix-en-Provence (France), SuperSonic Imagine is a company specializing in medical imaging. The company designs, develops and markets a revolutionary ultrasound system, Aixplorer®, with an UltraFast™ platform that can acquire images 200 times faster than conventional ultrasound systems. Aixplorer is the only system that can image two types of waves: ultrasound waves ensure excellent image quality and shear waves, which allow physicians to visualize and analyze the stiffness of tissue in a real-time, reliable, reproducible and non-invasive manner. This innovation, ShearWave™ Elastography, significantly improves the detection and characterization of numerous pathologies in several applications including breast, thyroid, liver and prostate. SuperSonic Imagine has been granted regulatory clearances for the commercialization of Aixplorer in the main global markets. Over the past years, SuperSonic Imagine enjoyed the backing of several prestigious investors, among which Auriga Partners, Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners, Bpifrance, Omnes Capital and NBGI.
