Trans-Lux Partners With Rochester Institute of Technology to Support Green Initiatives and Engage Students

Innovative LED Lighting and Large Screen Systems Deliver High Efficiency and Engagement

NORWALK, CT--(Marketwire - Nov 17, 2011) - Trans-Lux Corporation, a world-class leader in video displays and LED lighting solutions, has forged a multi-faceted partnership with Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to support the university's sustainability objectives and advance student engagement. Beyond the LED products that will be installed on campus, Trans-Lux also announced a fellowship program whereby RIT students will work with Trans-Lux R&D and engineering to develop new applications for LEDs in the lighting and video display categories. The announcement was made by J.M. Allain, President and CEO of Trans-Lux Corporation and Dr. William Destler, RIT President, during RIT's 2011 Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend.

"Our partnership with RIT is representative of how the 'new' Trans-Lux is dedicated to working with vertical markets such as higher education to provide innovative LED solutions aimed at fulfilling defined long-term objectives," said Mr. Allain. "An integral component in our new business plan is to be more than just a provider of LED technologies, but a true partner with industry leaders to deliver specific solutions to present and future needs. The widespread implementation of Trans-Lux LED technologies at RIT is testimony to the university's progressive thinking and leadership."

Highlights of the partnership include the installation of thousands of Trans-Lux TL Energy LED Lights to replace the university's current fluorescent tube lighting. Fluorescent tube lighting currently represents approximately 20 percent of all lighting on RIT's vast campus. The changeover to TL Energy LED Tube Lamps will result in a significant reduction of energy consumption and costs in support of RIT's commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030. The new TL Energy LED Tube Lamps consume more than 50 percent less energy cost/lumen dramatically reducing power consumption and energy expenses. The new lamps will last over 50,000 hours thereby sharply reducing RIT's maintenance costs. Installation of TL Energy Tube Lamps is slated to begin in December 2011.

To meet established requirements for power consumption, color temperature and longevity, Trans-Lux custom designed a new LED tube lamp specifically for RIT that the company believes will become a cornerstone lighting solution for colleges and universities across the country, according to Mr. Allain.

"RIT is committed to achieve the sustainability goals established in our Climate Action Plan which was launched in 2009. In addition to several other energy conservation efforts we are taking to reduce RIT's carbon footprint, the installation of TL Energy LED lighting will help us to significantly reduce energy consumption and costs with the added benefits of reduced maintenance," said Dr. Destler.

Trans-Lux is also supporting RIT's Tiger Power Play initiative to support construction of a new high-capacity hockey arena. To raise fan engagement at the new arena, RIT is installing a new TL Vision LED Large Screen System from Trans-Lux. The new
center- hung four-sided video display will feature Trans-Lux's innovative 10mm black LED technology that produces high-definition images comparable to flat panel LCD and plasma displays.

The RIT Tigers are an NCAA Division I team in the Atlantic Hockey Association and past national championship winners at the Division II and Division III levels. According to Dr. Destler, the new TL Vision LED display will not only bolster additional student and fan engagement, it will serve as a recruitment tool to attract potential applicants attending and viewing Tiger games locally and on national television.

Additionally, Trans-Lux has committed to a Research and Innovation Fellowship Program in RIT's Center for Student Innovation for students interested in developing new applications for LED technology.

"We are thrilled about this partnership with RIT," said Mr. Allain. "It embodies all the core technologies and solutions Trans-Lux offers, with the promise of developing new applications for LED products that provide even greater efficiencies and benefits. We see this partnership as the foundation for a new level of partnership with colleges and universities around the world."
